Hibbert & McGee Wholesalers was founded by James Jimmy Hibbert and his wife Margaret (nicknamed McGee) in 1956.
Jimmy Hibbert had spent 15 years as a sales person for H.E. Shaw out of Springfield Massachusetts before deciding to start his own business in East Barre, Vermont. He created Hibbert & McGee Wholesalers to meet the needs of Northern Vermont store owners, and that is what he set out to do on May 2, 1956.
In October of 1957, Alfred Atkins (better known as Buddy) started work for Hibbert & McGee as a salesperson. Together, he and Jimmy rode around Northern Vermont selling Cigarettes, Cigars and Tobacco to the area businesses.
Over the years, business increased and so did the need for larger quarters. Hibbert & McGee made its first move from Jimmys basement to a modified garage.
In the early 1970s, misfortune struck the roots of Hibbert & McGee and Jimmy Hibbert passed away. Buddy Atkins knew Jimmy would want his business to go on, so in 1974 he and his wife, Linda, bought the business and continued Jimmys quest.
By the mid-seventies Buddy felt the need to increase the product line and his timing couldnt have been better. Micky Sullivan, owner of Sullivan Confectionery in Montpelier was ready to retire and Buddy was ready to buy. After the purchase of Sullivan Confectionery, Hibbert & McGee not only could provide for customers tobacco needs, but also a variety of candies and a small medicinal and sundry product line.
Currently, Hibbert & McGee specializes in tobacco and candy as well as a hefty snack and grocery line, paper supplies, healthcare products, automotive supplies, foodservice, refrigerated products and sundry items. Because this industry changes so frequently, Hibbert & McGee are continually adding new products lines as needed and requested by our partners.
Hibbert & McGee have been through many changes over the past 20 years. In the late 80s a warehouse was built across the street from the modified garage, an addition which doubled its size was added in the mid 90s and in 2000 a full 2nd floor (doubling the square footage of the warehouse yet again) was added throughout the warehouse. As the Inventory and customer base grows, so does Hibbert & McGee.
Today, Hibbert & McGee is still operated by the next generation of Atkins; Jim Atkins as Vice President and Nancy Manning as Secretary. Hibbert & McGees delivery areas now include all of northern Vermont and as far south as Middlebury and Rutland, Vermont, with plans to expand both the distribution area and our warehouse, on the horizon.
We at Hibbert & McGee, take pride in being known for our excellent personal service, fair pricing, and we are always open to suggestions from you, our valued partners, because you are what keep us going.
